Chapter 3

Conclusion

The companion Huthaifa narrated: "I prayed with our beloved Prophet the night prayer.  He, peace be upon him, started reciting Surat Al-Baqarah 'The Cow.' I thought he would stop after a hundred verses, but he continued.  I thought he would recite it all and stop, but he continued into Surat Al Imran until he finished it.  He, peace be upon him, would recite slowly and beautifully.  If he read a verse that glorified God, he would pause and praise God.  If he read a verse that contained a supplication, he would pause and supplicate God.  And if he read a verse that mentioned evil, he would pause and seek refuge in God."

Prophet Muhammad advised us: "Read the Quran, for it will intercede on your behalf on the Day of Judgment.  Read Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-Imran, for they will come on the day of judgment like two massive clouds or two large flocks of birds defending their follower."

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "The Quran will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment, led by Surahs Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran."

Surah Al Imran was revealed in Medina.  The story behind its revelation is that of the Christian delegation of Najran from Yemen.  This delegation included many notable figures from Najran who had heard about the Prophet's mission.  They were devout Christians, some of the most ardent followers of Christ among the Arabs, including renowned theologians and clergymen.

Ibn Abi Hatim narrates that the Christians came to the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, to debate about our beloved Jesus claiming his divinity.  They asked, "Have you ever seen a child born without a father?  Who is his father?" implying that Jesus was the son of God.  The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, "Don't you agree that a child always resembles his father?" They said, "Of course." He said, "Don't you know that our Lord is alive and does not die and that Jesus perishes?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Don't you know that our Lord is the Sustainer of everything, guarding, preserving, and providing?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Does Jesus have any of these qualities?" They said, "No." He continued, "Don't you not know that nothing is hidden from God in earth or heaven?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Does Jesus know anything except what he was taught?" They said, "No." He said, "Don't you know that our Lord shaped Jesus in the womb as He willed?  Don't you agree that our Lord does not eat, drink, or relieve Himself?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Do you not know that Jesus was carried by his mother like any other woman carries a child, then she gave birth to him as any woman gives birth, then he was nourished like any other child, then he ate food, drank, and relieved himself?" They said, "Yes." He said, "So how can Jesus be as you claim?"

They recognized the truth, yet persisted in denial, so God revealed:

Alif, Lam, Meem.  Allah!  There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence (Chapter 3: Verses1 and 2)

Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-Imran are known as Al-Zahrawayn - the two bright ones - because they illuminate the believer's path to Paradise.  They guide the reciter to the truth with profound lessons and deep meanings.

We are deeply grateful to the Lord for blessing us with the opportunity to complete the Tafsir of these two magnificent chapters of the Quran.  To those who have been with us from the start, we want to say, "Thank you!"
