Session 578

Chapter 4

Verse 28

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak. (Chapter 4: Verse 28)

Allah began verse 26 of An-Nisaa with the phrase, "God wants to clarify to you" because He wants to guide you to the right path, then began Aya 27 with "God wants to turn towards you" because He wants to forgive your missteps along the path. Now, in verse 28, He says, "God wishes to lighten your burden."  In other words, He wants to make your journey on the straight path easier. What a wonderful Lord! Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him and his father, said: "In Surat An-Nisaa, there are eight verses for the nation of Muhammad. They are better than what the sun rises and sets upon. The first verse is,

God wants to clarify to you and guide you to the righteous ways of those who went before you. He wants to turn towards you in mercy- God is all knowing, all wise- (Chapter 4: Verse 26)

The second,

God wants to turn towards you, but those who follow their desires want you to deviate greatly. (Chapter 4: Verse 27)

The third Aya,

God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak. (Chapter 4: Verse 28)

The fourth,

If you avoid the major sins which you have been forbidden, We will blot out from you your minor evil deeds and make you enter through the entrance of honor. (Chapter 4: Verse 31)

The fifths,

Verily, God does not forgive associating anything with Him, but He pardons anything short of that to whoever He will. Anyone who associates partners with God has committed a tremendous sin. (Chapter 4: Verse 48)

The sixth,

Anyone who does evil or wrongs himself and then asks God's forgiveness will find God Most-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Chapter 4: Verse 110)

The seventh,

Allah does not wrong anyone by so much as the tiniest speck. And if there is a good deed, Allah will multiply it and pay out an immense reward directly from Him. (Chapter 4: Verse 40)

And the eighth verse is,

Why should God punish you if you are thankful and have faith? God is All-Thankful, All-Knowing. (Chapter 4: Verse 147)"

These are the eight verses unparalleled in any Heavenly book to any nation but the nation of Muhammad, peace be upon him. They are shining full of good and hope. Among them is the verse under study today. God says, "God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak." What is our human weakness? It's our susceptibility to temptation and our failure to consider the long-term consequences of our actions. Take the example of a thief planning a bank robbery. Has he seriously considered that his hand would be cut off if he stole? Did he think that this money would land him in Hellfire? If he did, he would find another line of work. But he assumes he would get away with the robbery, thinking, "My plan is ironclad. I covered every possibility." Then he starts dreaming about the easy life and what he will do with the money. In short, human weakness lies in being easily seduced by immediate gratification while ignoring future consequences. Temptations entice you now, while the rewards of obedience seem distant. Allah responds with, "God wishes to lighten your burden" because leniency suits human weakness.

Temptations entice, while obedience's rewards are distant. Thus, humans often prioritize the present over the future. However, if you have a thoughtful mind, you realize that no greater desire surpasses the ambition of earning Allah's favor and being in His company in Paradise.
