Tafsir Surah An-Nisaa: The Women - Verse 31 - Can You Fight Magic?

Today, we dive deeper into the world of Jinn and magic in Islam. More importantly, we will answer the most critical question: How to protect yourself and your family from such evils. Let's begin.

Session 592

Chapter 4

Verse 31

a continuation

If you avoid the major sins you have been forbidden, We shall absolve you of your minor misdeeds and let you in through the entrance of honor. (Chapter 4: Verse 31)

Some skeptics and superficial thinkers question the existence of the Jinn, angels, and other unseen worlds by asking, "This is fantasy world! What are these beings you mention!?" To them, I ask, “Do you only believe in what you can see?! When the microscope was invented, didn’t we discover entire worlds of microorganisim we did not know before?  Didn’t bacteria already exisit for millions of years despite being unkown to us?  Such discoveries should make you consider the real possibility that many more undetected entities exist.”

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said "Indeed, Satan flows through the son of Adam like blood." You might wonder, "Does Satan flow like blood? Is he a liquid, or what?" We answer that the Jinn are a subtle and unseen creation with its own laws.  God exposed the fallacy of atheists when science discovered creatures like microbes, which, although material and made of earth, are incredibly tiny.  What do microbes do? They infiltrate your body without your awareness and flow in the blood.  When you hear from the Messenger of God that Satan runs through you like blood, is that a far-fetched contradiction? If something as minute as a microbe can enter unnoticed, disrupt your body, and provoke a disease, inflammation, and tempreture rise, why would you dismiss other possibilities?

Allah tells us that there is vast knowledge beyond our own that He gave to a select few humans.  Listen to the following Ayat quoting our beloved Solomon,

Then he said, "Counsellors, which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?" An ifreet of the jinn said, "I will bring it to you before you get up from your seat. I am strong and trustworthy to handle it."  But one of them who had some knowledge of the Scripture said, "I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye." When Solomon saw it set before him, he said, "This is a favour from my Lord, to test whether I am grateful or not: if anyone is grateful, it is for his own good, if anyone is ungrateful, then my Lord is self-sufficient and most generous."  (27:38-40)

Allah brought forth a human to demonstrate that it's not just the natural traits of the Jinn, like speed, agility, and transparency, stemming from their fire-based creation that matter.  Instead, it was the knowledge granted by Allah that made the difference.  A human, with Allah's grace, could control forces far more powerful than a formidable Jinn.  God didn't grant such power universally to humans to prevent chaos among people who would surely misuse it as a form of magic for personal gain and revenge.

We find an example of such abuses in Surah Al-Baqarah of such abuses.  God says,

And they followed what the devils recite during Solomon’s reign —and Solomon did not turn faithless, but it was the devils who were faithless— teaching the people magic, and what was sent down to the two angels at Babylon, Haroot and Maroot, and they would not teach anyone without saying: ‘We are only a test, so do not be faithless.’ But they would learn from those two that with which they would cause a split between man and his wife —though they could not harm anyone with it except with Allah’s permission. And they would learn that which would harm them and bring them no benefit; though they certainly knew that anyone who buys it has no share in the Hereafter. Surely, evil is that for which they sold their souls; had they known! (2:102)

This is a perfect case why magic and sorecery are major sins in Islam that lead to Hellfire.  Keep in mind that such powers only function by God’s permission.  He can empower the weaker human race to harness the stronger Jinn.  The Jinn are also well aware of this dynamic, thus, if they appear to humans they only do so for a few seconds.  The Jinn do not maintain a physical form because, once in human or animal form, they are subjected to the laws of that form, such as being susceptible to capture and harm.

The believing jinn content themselves within their natural laws.  In contrast, disbelieving humans and Jinn chase after magic, supernatural abilities, and unfair advantages to gain power and exploit others.  People who seek magic often perform actions to separate a wife from her husband or vice versa.  Why? To satisfy their own lust!

The secret to overcoming such powers is to keep God's words in mind: "Though they could not harm anyone with it except with Allah’s permission." The Quran recognizes the existence of magic, but it's crucial to understand that it’s effects are not controlled by the practitioners.  If Allah decides to shield someone from the effects of magic, then magicians simply cannot harm them.

More importantly, those who seek out magicians to cast spells on rivals, or for protection from harm, will live troubled lives.  Listen to the following Aya,

Certain men from among mankind used to seek refuge with certain men from among the jinn but they only increased their burden further. (72:6)

Magicians’ ability to cast spells only add to the stress and discomfort of everyone involved.

How do you portect yourself and your family?  I advise you to learn the following supplication: "O Allah, You have empowered some of Your creation with magic, and You have retained the authority to prevent harm.  I seek refuge with Your protection from the magic You have empowered."

Our beloved Muhammad taught us to recite,

Say, "I seek refuge with the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of the darkness when it gathers, from the evil of sorceresses who blow incantations on knots, and from the evil of the envious one when he envies. (Chapter 113)
